Due to the Summer holiday the magazine will not be updated In September. But It will be back in October. Dear Friends in Yoga, Welcome Yoga postures are not an end in themselves and it really does not matter whether one eventually masters the splits, the handstand or whatever other posture one aspires to. Yoga is not just asanas. Asanas are not even necessary for the practice of yoga. Postures can bring the practitioner to a state of optimal physical health and are therefore panacea for stressful lifestyles but they should not be used to impress others or the self. The displaying of an ill-placed sense of superiority only feeds the ego, the very same thing that one is trying to transcend! One must learn to let go of attachment to the postures. Yoga reconnects one with one’s divine nature and the postures are only an aid to the process of going deeper within. It is not a question of what one looks like externally in a posture but of what one feels and experiences internally when in a posture. Postures are a means of self-observation, of self-enquiry, listening and noticing, tuning into what is present in one’s awareness at that very moment. By putting the body in a certain position, one can observe the quality of one’s breath and know the quality of one’s mind, because mind and breath are very closely linked. The breath will not be the same whether one is agitated or relaxed. By changing the breath pattern, one can change the way one feels. The breath can control the wanderings of the mind. By controlling the breath, one can control the mind. The breath brings one into the present moment and connects mind, body and spirit. Namaste Sabine |
